UFC 220 featured two huge title fights in the main and co-main events, and their significance was reflected in the salary.
Accoding to Massachusetts State Athletic Commision
Stipe Miocic, Daniel Cormier, Francis Ngannou and Volkan Oezdemir combined earned $1,950,000, which accounted for more than 76 percent of the money made by the 22 fighters on the card.
Leading the way was Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who made $600,000 following his five-round battle. His opponent Francis Ngannou managed to earn $500,000 in defeat. Stipe defeated “The Predator” via unanimous decision, breaking the consecutive defense record with three in a row.
Not a bad night for the hard-hitting strikers.
That said, officialy Stipe did not get a bonys or more pay-per-view (PPV) points, to the naked eye it doesn’t look like if he got the pay raise he wanted — which led to a brief holdout — as his $600,000 pay is the same he earned for UFC 203.
Stipe Miocic’s wife also heavily criticized UFC for disrespecting her husband.
Meanwhile, another big earner was Daniel Cormier, who banked $500,000 after walking right through Volkan Oezdemir, who in his turn scored an impressive $350,000 payday.
The total disclosed payroll for UFC 220 was $ 2,549,000.
Here is the complete list of fighter’s earnings
After dismantling Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220 , light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will move up in weight to challenge current UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 226
On the “Believe You Me” podcast Cormier said. “I’m in the conversation for the greatest fighter ever. I think that I should be talked about as one of the best fighters, regardless, because of what I’ve done in this sport in such a short period of time. But yeah, I believe that when you stack Stipe Miocic on top of (other big names I’ve beaten), then it starts to become a conversation, a real conversation as to where I do go in history.”
Cormier feels holding two heavyweight belts would be greater than any other two belts, because the heavyweight and 205-pound divisions arguably have more historical significance than any other in the sport.
“If I can go and accomplish this thing that’s so rare and so far left, yes, I should be in the conversation,” But not only one of the greatest to do it, the greatest to ever do it. Not just one of, but the conversation for the best fighter of all time. I truly believe that, because it’s such a massive accomplishment.”
Some people were surprised that Cormier agreed to fight Miocic and move a weight class because of his earlier comments that we will never go back to the heavyweight division.
“I was dead serious when I said I had no interest in that fight, but Dana White and the UFC, they have ways of making things happen that they want to happen,” Cormier said. “When they started really trying to make the fight happen, it became very difficult for me to say no. … I spoke to Cain. Cain said to me, ‘I don’t think they’re going to give me a title shot right away. But this is such a huge opportunity, I think you should take it. When you win the fight, that’s a bridge we’ll cross when we get there.'”
As far as the fight itself goes, Cormier said he knows beating Miocic won’t be easy. Miocic broke the record for most consecutive heavyweight title defenses, and he has every intention of further extending his reign.
Cormier believes he has what it takes to solve the Miocic mystery, though. He said his style is problematic for the champ, and he intends on showing why.
“He’s a very tough guy, very durable, very well rounded,” Cormier said. “He can do everything. There’s no glaring weakness in his fighting style. It’s just when they made me the offer it was like, ‘Oh, this seems pretty good.’ I’ve always felt it’s a good fight stylistically for me. A guy like Luke Rockhold would give me trouble because he’s a kicker. Those are the guys I struggle with more. Essentially I wrestle, and I box, and that’s what Stipe Miocic does.”
Let me know in the comments guys what do you think about this fight Stepe vs Cormier
